A collection of character rigging and technical animation work from my time at DreamWorks Animation and Rhythm & Hues.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked
Technical Animator
The first shot was the hardest shot I had on in Alvin 3, and remains one of the most challenging shots I’ve ever worked on. Multiple simulations were used, along with target shapes, a one-off tech rig, and custom constraints to get the tearing effect.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked
There was also a lot of character interaction within shots, which was a challenge due to the multiple flower petals on many of the outfits. Wet pelts, wet clothing, an underwater sequence and characters getting hit with raindrops were all some of the things that we needed to figure out on this show.

Snow White and the Huntsman
Technical Animator
The majority of the tech work on this show was muscle simulations, which were used on the troll, the Great Father (which is the white deer seen in three shots) and the fairies. The tech rigs gave us the ability to animate and finesse muscle firing, after which a skin slide simulation would be run.

Mr. Popper's Penguins
Technical Animator
I set up a one-off tech rig for the string and the kite, and then followed the director’s notes to get the string to wrap the way that they wanted to. The layers of the kite had to also get tied up and affected by the string, though the main challenge of the string was keeping it from disappearing in the penguin’s fur-like feathers.

Hop
Technical Animator
With multiple sequences featuring seatbelts that has to interact with the layers of EB’s clothing, Hop was a great introduction to the world of the various challenges in technical animation. The seatbelt shot shown here was my most difficult shot on the show, mostly due to the fact that is was difficult to get the seatbelt to feel like a seatbelt.

Penguins of Madagascar
Character TD
I was a facial rigger on this show, and was tasked with rigging Private’s face, as well as the generic background male faces (there were 8 of them) and the generic background male penguin faces (3 of them).
1:29-1:43
This short was my first chance to be a rigging lead, and I got to design the body and facial systems for the characters that was used to set up the father and son alien shown in these two shots. In order for the father, son, and bear to all interact, a special space switching system was created.
1:44-2:06
A fun, cartoony corgi that I put together for a friend to animate for an assignment. I worked directly with him to give him controls that he needed, and also ended up modeling most of the blend shapes for the face. To test the rig on my end, I played around with simple body and face poses to see what sort of range I could get.
