Of course there exceptions, but when you are doing stop motion animation, you nearly always animate all the characters in the scene. Even if you do a couple of passes because of focus, or you can't reach both puppets at the same time or there are too many puppets to manage in one shot, you would normally animate all passes.

This shot where the little round character is swinging himself through the factory was very challenging. He is probably traveling a bit more than a couple of metres (6-7 feet). With camera and focus moving I had a very narrow window for him to past camera. That can make you go slighty insane when you are doing it all straight ahead. No key frames, no going back to tweek position.
