This was a really great sequence on which to work. The boards were wonderful, and gave me a great starting foundation.

The dialogue has not really changed in this section since the first draft. I think Dean had it pretty clear in his head what he wanted to happen. So, rather than over previzing it, I set a tone with Hiccup's pose, hoping to give the animator a strong base with lots of room to move..

I used the camera to show they were alone, and it was all about Hiccup and how much he relies on Toothless.

We had some wonderful camera tools at DW which allowed us to wrack focus in Maya, which was not only very helpful technically but also very important emotionally.

As a previz artist I must make the intent of a shot as clear as possible without boxing in the animators or down stream departments. The little shift forward in the saddle and adjustment of Toothless' wings are there to show unease and a state of high alert. I am always very happy when the animator who gets the shot builds on my suggestions.

Many of these shots were not in the boards. I did a ton of coverage of exciting angles, some from the perspective of Hiccup, some from the view of the mysterious stranger and some more descriptive, relationship shots, so that the editor had good selects with which to craft the action.

This was one of those shots that did not translate on boards, but once it was in previz just jumped out. I made it much longer than the original timing, as I wanted it to feel like our heroes were in trouble, and being circled by a gigantic shark. It was a real thrill to see this one on the big screen.

I had fun with blocking all of the action and working on ways to keep the camera alive and emotionally engaged. Most of the dragon animation was built from anim cycles I had created to be used by the previz team.
