Tempest
Animation Apprentice
Brazen Animation Teaser: Tempest. Internship for 2 months. Animated character according to director's vision. The jacket rig was not fully developed yet, but I shaped it to keep as guide for others to finish it. This was my first experience in treating the rig as a 2D object, and had to stretch and shape the character exactly as intended by the director. Keeping the flow of lines and the design of the character graphic. It was a very challenging experience, worth the effort.

Animated all characters plus the tears effect. I was hired in crunch time and had to learn quickly the design style as well as the rig and facial relationships to finish this shot fast and effectively.

A very fun shot to animate. Lot's of fun timing with the Turbo Toilet, and I appreciated the freedom they gave me to choose how to dismount the boys from the skates. I was reminded to tone down the way Harold dismounted his skate, since he is more reserved and small compared to George's personality. As always, ultimately it was the collaborated effort of myself, the lead, the supervisors, and director that made this shot work.

This shot was a wild ride. My lead and I communicated with the supervisors and director to choose the best course of intent for this shot. It was at first a simpler "a-ha" shot. But we had to communicate to the audience the inner conflicting emotions of the boys changing Mr. Krupp back to Captain, something they promised each other to never do again, since Captain was more trouble than he was worth. After a few quick animation takes and showings, we reached these acting choices you see on screen. The director was well pleased, and it helped to shift the tone of the movie more seamlessly to the final show-down and climax.

Animation Intern
Summer Internship at Blue Sky. Collaborated with Internship mentors consisting of leads and supervisors from past Blue Sky projects to create an internship reel. The 2 months were intensive and helped me learn how to work more efficiently with time constrains.

A shot to explore how to rely and translate video reference into animation. I shot my own video with myself as the subject, pushing the body accents and acting while filming it all in one take. This is a technique used by Jeff Gabor who was my project mentor for this shot.
I also had overarching mentors whom were in ever project: Ray Ross and Joe Antonuccio.

A mix of video reference and cartoony smear frames. Plus grease pencil animated snot. The perfect recipe for a fun shot.
Learned to think more graphically and to add subtleties of face animation and overlap while making sure all the body relationships worked as a connected whole.
Main mentor: Matt Doble.

Used thumbnails/ preliminary sketches to mark out all key poses. Used grease pencil to figure out breakdowns and in-betweens, and shaped the character according to the grease pencil drawings, ultimately translating a traditional animation idea into 3D.
Mentor Melvin Tan.
