Groom Artist

ILM’s Groom Artist Team sits alongside our Digital Model Shop and Creature Teams. Creating hair, fur and/or feather grooms for characters and creatures as part of the Creature / Character pipeline for high-end VFX projects.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Creation of fur/feather/hair/environment grooms for characters, creatures and environments using a mix of off the shelf and ILM proprietary tools
- Collaborate with Creature TD’s to determine requirements and solutions for dynamics and layouts
- Paint colour and specular maps for hair, fur and feathers
- Work closely with additional departments in the Creature workflow including Modeling, Animation and Lighting
- Maintains or exceeds consistent level of productivity while meeting deadlines and producing high quality work
Required Skills / Technical Competencies:
- Proven experience within a high-end VFX facility
- Demo reel and portfolio illustrating knowledge and experience in painting, illustration or design
- Familiarity with film production; computer graphics
- Attention to detail
- Proven Groom skills within a high-end VFX production environment
- Ability to learn quickly and assimilate new information
- Good interpersonal skills
Preferred Skills / Competencies:
- Good organizational skills
- Grooming portfolio with creatures, digidoubles, and feathers
- Ability to liaise with various parts of the Computer Graphics pipeline
- Proficient in Maya, Houdini, Mari (preferred), Zbrush, Photoshop, or Bodypaint
- Ability to navigate complex Computer Graphics pipelines
- Texture/ Surfacing painting skills are a plus.
Education / Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts or equivalent with a strong traditional art foundations: including but not limited to figure drawing, concept art and illustration.
- 5+ years relevant experience
