Solely responsible for the design implementation of Ingenuity Studios’ in-house feather pipeline, a hybrid system utilizing a combination of packed primitive body feathers, fully deformable and simulatable hero feathers, and downy fur. Feather types are defined parametrically and initially placed procedurally, driven by density, size, and type maps and/or attributes. A suite of completely custom grooming tools allows for fine tuning. A mesh driven body and coat deformation system allows for traditional skinning methods to refine posed shapes while maintaining anatomically correct interior body surfaces. The system has been used in production in VRay, Mantra, and Renderman, and is stable and user friendly enough that CG artists frequently turn around new projects without any need for intervention from FX.
