The LEGO Movie
These shots in Emmet's apartment were amongst the earliest animated in the film. They were used primarily to set the audience up for the style of the film. Also they were used to set the style for the animators who would join the team later on - a very stop motion feel! I animated all the parts including the effects.
0:39-1:02
The LEGO Movie
I animated all the characters in this 23sec shot. It was a homage to great films like "Airplane" and "Naked Gun" where the BG comedy totally upstages the FG ... but without distracting from it.
1:03-1:05
The LEGO Movie
Again not just the characters, everything animated in the shot is made from Lego. Action Lucy: GO!
1:06-1:11
The LEGO Movie
Batman and Benny entering the evil lair, some great deliveries from Will Arnett as Batman and a fun opportunity for comedy timing
1:11-1:19
The LEGO Movie
Here the aim was to find Emmet at his lowest point. He has let everyone down, all his friends and his self loathing is at an all time high. But he can't be down for long and redemption is only a ghostly voice away...
1:20-1:31
The LEGO Movie
As Emmet sacrifices himself to save everyone and Lucy is powerless to help or intervene, this was a great opportunity to generate some heartfelt drama between the couple, heroism for Emmet and frustrated loss for Lucy.
1:32-1:43
The LEGO Movie
I animated all the moving Lego in the shots. Emmet has returned to his world, now he IS the Special. it's a very complex shot and it was great fun creating "motion blur" out of static, replacement Lego bricks
1:45-1:47
The LEGO Movie
A nice shot with some wonderful evil sarcasm from Will Ferrell.
1:49-1:56
The LEGO Movie
I animated mostly the second half of this shot (from after chomping truck dives out) but also Benny's spaceship and crew for the whole shot. I was also involved in the initial camera setup which was re-lensed afterwards.
1:56-2:05
The LEGO Movie
This shot was from the presentation at ComicCon, a great chance to have all the principle chars in one shot and to utilise another great performance from Will Ferrell. Not forgetting seeing the directors, Chris Miller and Phil Lord in Lego form!

The Pirates! Band of misfits
OK, this was not from the film but it was an animation test I did with the previs rigs and an old 11sec Club line to see just how stop mo some CG could be. The stop motion guys at aardman seemed to approve...! :)
2:24-2:33
The Pirates! Band of misfits
CG/Stop mo style testing with preivs rigs using layers to blend between singles and doubles depending on the speed of action.
2:34-2:37
The Pirates! Band of misfits
Run cycles tests to measure gate and stride length to indicate how much set needed to be bulit on the studio floor.
2:38-2:43
The Pirates! Band of misfits
This was an interesting test because while the animation is nice it was turned down by the stop lads. I had animated in spline and then baked it to doubles which, really, just looks like CG on twos rather than stop motion animation.
2:43-2:49
The Pirates! Band of misfits
One of my favourite lip sync tests. Previs rigs, no mouth shapes to work with and an old recording before the voice of the Pirate Captain had been settled on. Just a great exchange though.
