Giancarlo Lari was born in Rome, where he passionately studied traditional arts, design, and Zen
practice.
A natural artist since he was a kid, he received the J.R.R. Tolkien Painting Award in Italy at age 17:
in the same year, he also started working as a Concept and Storyboard Artist for his first movie.
He becomes the exclusive cover artist for the financial magazine Espansione at age 22.
After a few years of working as an Illustrator in Rome, he got in love with Digital Imaging, and
after a quick training, he become the resident visualizer for the design firm NoFrontiere in
Vienna, Austria.
The next year he founded the VFX boutique “Image Factory” also in Vienna, where he directed
his first animated short.
Subsequently, he went freelance in Italy and Germany, helping many studios to raise the quality
of their Digital Imaging Portfolio.
In 1996 he joined Digital Domain as the first Character Rigging Supervisor for the movie Titanic,
where he developed many groundbreaking animation techniques to speed the production of the
VFX Academy Awards winner. He continued his career at Digital Domain, working as a Swiss
Army Digital Artist on X-Men, Lake Placid, The Grinch, and many commercials and videos,
including the haunting Bjork's video “The Hunter” for which he developed the transformation of
the singer into a metallic bear.
He also introduced, promoted, and trained the resident Digital Domain Artists to Maya.
After he independently produced and directed the animated short “The Coin” in 2002, he
returned full-time to the VFX industry, first as a CG Supervisor on “The Day After Tomorrow”
movie for the studio Orphanage, and then as an Associate VFX Supervisor on “Fantastic Four”
for Giant Killer Robots, both in San Francisco. Both these experiences were crucial in bringing
Giancarlo back to his first passion and talent: painting. These experiences were also crucial to
preparing the solid foundations he needed for his subsequent work with DigiMattes, 2.5D,
Photogrammetry, IBL, Scene Referred Lighting, and Linear Images.
He successfully continued to work as a VFX Supervisor, CG Supervisor, DigiMatte Supervisor, or
simply as a Digital Artist for many commercials and films.
After working for four years at Microsoft Cognition (former Analog) as a Senior Designer for VR
he is currently working as a freelancer in the LA area.
