Milford Animation Studios
is hiring
FX TD (Remote in EU possible)
Milford is a Stockholm-based production company with over two decades of global experience crafting high-quality cinematics and CGI. We help game developers, advertising agencies, and production companies stand out in competitive markets by showcasing their games and products effectively. We value growth, continuous learning, and a supportive studio environment where artists look out for one another while we collectively push the boundaries of our craft.
About the Role
We are looking for an FX Technical Director to join the team for a fixed-term parental leave cover from May 25th to December 31st (Week 22–53). At Milford, the FX TD bridges complex physics and beautiful imagery. You will work on character hair, fur, cloth, and body tissue simulations, ensuring our characters move with cinematic weight.
Beyond running sims, you will be collaborating directly with our Producers, Directors, Supervisors, and the rest of the team to ensure every project hits that Milford finish.
Who You Are
You are a decisive problem solver and a team player who has both an artistic and technical eye. We’re a close-knit crew, so we’re looking for someone who brings a positive attitude to the studio, works well under deadlines, and genuinely enjoys the puzzle of technical artistry.
Responsibilities
- Develop and run high-quality CFX simulations (hair, fur, cloth, tissue).
- Build and maintain Houdini tools and HDAs to support production workflows.
- Collaborate with departments to ensure smooth pipeline integration.
- Troubleshoot and optimize simulation setups under production deadlines.
Qualifications
- Houdini Mastery: Expert knowledge of Houdini across the board—from CFX (Cloth, Hair, Fur) to natural phenomena FX (Fire, Smoke, Fluids, and Vegetation).
- Technical Architecture: Proven ability to create and maintain robust HDAs and Python scripts that simplify complex setups for the rest of the team.
- Pipeline Intelligence: A strong understanding of the full character and environment pipeline, ensuring seamless integration from Maya through to lighting and rendering.
- Artistic Observation: A keen eye for real-world physics and the ability to "cheat" those physics to meet Milford’s high aesthetic standards.
- Professional Pedigree: Prior experience in VFX, animation, or game cinematics, with experience using tools like Flow Production Tracking (ShotGrid).
Additional Information
While our preference is to have a team member on-site in our Stockholm studio to foster close collaboration with a hybrid setup (with two mandatory office days per week), we are open to remote setups for candidates based within the EU.
Duration: May 25th – December 31st (Week 22–53)
Bringing characters to life is in our DNA. Bold, shy, humorous, scary or whatever traits that are necessary for a character to tell her or his story in a believable way are a natural part of our everyday life as an animation studio. We have created thousands of characters over the years and all of them with personal depth and attitude to give that extra touch to storytelling.
